Above are two links about ornaments and non harmony notes.

A point to clarify, for music scores that are written before 1800, if it contains a trill it is played by starting with a note above it. Music scores with trill after 1800 is however played starting on the given note itself. For further information, refer to attach website.

However, please bear in mind that theory is somewhat subjective at times. Therefore the interpretation of scores might differ according to the composer. .. and probably the conductor as well. =)

Wikipedia is such a good encyclopedia... You can find almost anything in it... what a useful tools...

These ornaments and non harmony notes are used mostly in baroque and classical periods... I've heard that it's because of the unavailability of pedal in the harpsichord so they gotta decorate the melody line with contrapuntal or polyphonic style to make it interesting... but it would be hard for them to compose romantic music... :P
